Advanced Electrical Engineer at STERIS Corporation in Mentor, OH

Position Summary The Advanced Electrical Engineer (EE) has technical leadership and responsibility over the design, development and integration of innovative hardware into new medical device products within the Operating Room. Duties include definition of high level architecture and detailed embedded controls system design and development. The Advanced EE executes hardware design activities on key new product development programs. The candidate must be able to solve complex controls system design problems by applying knowledge of engineering or scientific principles to accomplish technical assignments, while delivering products within schedule, cost, performance, quality and reliability targets. The candidate will have a capability to effectively interface with multiple engineering disciplines to arrive at the optimum design in an efficient manner. Products are developed to meet FDA requirements. Therefore, the candidate must demonstrate an understanding of designing product in a regulated environment. Duties o Works as a collaborative team member on new product development projects in R&D to deliver innovative technical solutions. o Applies electrical engineering principles to architect and design complex controls system, subsystems and subassemblies. o Applies electrical engineering principles in the selection of sensors, motors, valves, and associated controls required for the design. o Executes or support feasibility studies on hardware design options to help determine optimum design solutions or to confirm system capabilities, quality and reliability. o Develops cost effective h/w designs to meet industry standards (e.g. IEC, NEC) and to meet customer needs. o Develops component and system level technical specifications to implement new product designs. o Build, modify and/or test complex electrical design solutions for electronic circuitry, systems, sensors and other h/w or control elements from functional system requirements. o Determines required tasks, durations and materials needed to complete electrical team deliverables. o Prepares adequate directions to designer support personnel for generating detail models, layouts and drawings for a variety of components and electrical or electromechanical sub-assemblies. o Provide guidance to technicians, designers and engineering peers in the development of R&D prototypes and design verification units. o Interacts with vendors, suppliers, and engineering consultants in the selection of components that comply with requirements and specifications. o Derives, interprets, and summarizes engineering test data. Prepares reports, charts, graphs, and other required documents. o Create test procedures and setups, for conducting design verification (electrical, thermal, EMC, etc.) to verify h/w performance against design inputs. o Prepare high quality engineering documentation (e.g. calculations, system schematics, theory of operation, BOMs). o Support manufacturing transfer by identifying test requirements and appropriate test equipment and engineering tools required for production. Required Experience o Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or another related Technical Field. o 7
years of experience in hardware design, including controls system and embedded hardware. o Experience designing within a multi-discipline project development environment. o Master's Degree is a plus. o Self-motivated and innovative, yet an exceptional team player. o Experience with developing embedded systems hardware, including processor selection, motion controllers, encoders, potentiometers, sensor integration and control, low power design, analog design, switching power supply selection. o Design experience with communication protocols/networks, including CAN bus, I2C, RS485, Ethernet, USB, SPI. o Experience manufacturing and delivery of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) required. Design experience with schematic capture and layout of embedded circuit boards desired. o Experience using electrical CAD tools electrical harness, electrical system schematic and control box designs. o Experience with developing user interface hardware (e.g. touch-screen units, keypads, keypad schematics, etc). o Experience with powering electrical devices such as motors, sensors, user interfaces and other electronics. o Knowledge of programming languages used in embedded or test/simulation environments helpful (C, Python, etc.). o Experience designing hardware to meet IEC, UL, IPC, RoHS, CE and other applicable standards. IEC 60601-1 desired. o Experience with reading and using schematics and component data sheets for design and troubleshooting. o Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping and debugging, functional verification and pre-production ramp-up. o Proficient with electrical test equipment (e.g. multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, function generators, logical analyzers); Willingness to be hands-on in the lab and in the details (e.g. soldering, crimping, building cables). o Knowledge of implementation or integration of wireless communication (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) a plus. o Knowledge of video technology and video signal integration a plus. o Knowledge of use of simulation & modeling tools is a plus. o Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures/manuals; English fluency.
